Manzanita

Indie Folk band from Northern California with blends of Americana, Country and Folk.  A Manzanita performance is a huge sound from two men.  Aaron Shively's pedal steel playing is seasoned and tasteful with a 'Hammond organ-like' tone.  His mandolin will delight any bluegrass lover.  Nick Foster fronts with his acoustic guitar, harmonica, kick drum and snare drum simultaneously.  Original songwriting with storytelling, catchy vocal melodies and powerful harmonies give this duo a classic and eclectic sound all can enjoy.

Late For The Train & Honey Run

Late for the Train: Late for the Train is an indie-folk string band rooted in American folk and bluegrass music. Infused with the honest depth of the coastal redwood forests and the heartfelt community of the North Bay, the band provides a playful and poignant musical experience that uplifts the spirit and rouses the soul.

Travel back to a time of hearthside storytelling with these California natives, reveling in the rich traditions of Americana, bluegrass, folk, and Celtic music. Their dynamic songwriting is inspired by influences such as Emmylou Harris, Bob Dylan, Béla Fleck and Abigail Washburn, Watchhouse, Mipso, and Nickel Creek.

The core ensemble includes songwriters and multi-instrumentalists David Pascoe (guitar), Laura Benson (fiddle), and Thom Beneduci (stand-up bass). The trio’s skillful craftsmanship meets tender harmonies and potent lyrics that grapple with all the wonder, contradiction, and truth of living in the modern age. Their debut album, Plant It or Build It, was released on September 4th, 2020.

  • Honey Run: Honey Run brings a fun mix of thoughtful original folk music, fast picking and playing, and lively old bluegrass tunes. Beautiful harmonies, by Kat Baker and Owen Ragland are complemented by the fiddle, the mandolin and guitar. The full sound that accompanies the thoughtful lyrics and catchy melodies of Kat’s songs ranges from tender to downright fun. The eclectic mix of oldtimey roots, americana sounds, and "stellar picking" truly creates a unique experience.

Movie Club

Formed in October 2018, Movie Club is an instrumental rock duo out of Venice Beach, California. Movie Club is Jessamyn Violet on drums and Vince Cuneo on guitar.

After only a few weeks of playing together, the band performed their first show for a Cal Jam party that local legend Robbie Krieger (The Doors) was headlining. Seeing the potential of the project, the two started writing every day and playing live around Los Angeles. The band experimented with mixing their favorite genres of music and channeling other instrumental groups.

They went on to drop two EPs, “Kraken” & “Hammerhead,” collaborating with producer Matt Wignall (Cold War Kids, Wargirl) and bassist Erick ”Jesus” Coomes (Dr. Dre, Kanye, Lettuce). The group performed 30 shows, received KCRW airtime, & built an international following in one year.

To further show their range, Jessamyn & Vince decided to make a grittier & more psychedelic EP with their third release “Man O’ War” out 3/31/20. Inspired by both modern and classic psych rock bands, they retreated to the desert to demo their new songs. Working with a different team, the four song EP was recorded at Kingsize Soundlabs by Brian Rosemeyer, featuring bassist Tim Lefebvre (David Bowie, Black Crowes).

Drawing from their deep love of film, Movie Club produces and directs their own cinematic music videos in order to illustrate their visual, musical, & artistic influences. Their first music video, “Surf Basement,” is classic black and white. Beautifully shot by DP Mike Mast, it shows the group wandering a dilapidated pier in the Pacific ocean. “Navy Seal” is a tribute to surf rock legend Dick Dale, and was coincidentally recorded the day after he passed. For the music video, the group collaborated with notorious street artist Muck Rock & surf videographer Michael Veltman. For their latest “Man O’ War” music videos, they recruited talented videographer Dustin Downing. “Moonbow” was filmed in Venice and was an ode to Beastie Boys “Sabotage.” “Bones” was shot at an abandoned California water park and has heavy references to “Mad Max” and “Indiana Jones.” “Driftwood” was shot in front of iconic independent Hollywood venues during the quarantine as a video tribute to the end of an era.

Movie Club’s mission is to keep producing unique art for an international fan base. They released Black Flamingo on Nov. 27th, 2020 to international critical acclaim. The band’s debut full-length record features special guests on a few tracks: bassist Tim Lefebvre, Rami Jaffee on organ, and violinist Jessy Greene. The album was recorded and mixed by Jeff Thompson and mastered by Mike Tucci. “Like a road trip through a David Lynch film, with Movie Club you’re never quite sure where you’re going to end up,” says Louder Than War in their review of the album. The music video of the title track “Black Flamingo” was directed by Ran Pink and features the bandmates dressed in masquerade masks performing magic tricks in a tiny spirit house.

Movie Club’s 4th EP “Fangtooth” was released August 10th, 2021. Their seventh music video, made for the single “Trap Door”, features the duo exploring the wild terrain of Salton Sea, CA, and won “Best Music Video” at the 2022 Istanbul Film Awards.

Marty O'Reilly Trio

Marty O'Reilly Trio

Explaining Marty O’Reilly’s music is like describing a dream. It feels familiar, but at the same time unchartered. His songs sound bluesy but not blues, folk but not folk, soulful but not soul. Marty’s voice is beautiful and unique, his lyrics stark yet lush over gritty electrified guitar, melding beautifully into genre-defying music within the vast definitions of Americana. One can hear an urgency and complexity in the songs, expressing something elemental and perhaps contradictory: love and anger, joy and pain, real and imagined.

The live performance is at the core of Marty’s projects. On stage, whether accompanied by a band, or alone, he enters a trance and the music is born again as something new every night. It’s what his followers call “magic”. He goes from raw gospel blues to cinematic epics, from heavy driving grooves to delicately arranged folk songs. Marty leaves the stage out of breath and sweaty, his audience in awe. It's hard to describe, impossible to categorize. Yet people who know the music will try to explain it to you, just as you might struggle to explain a dream in the morning. The details might slip away as you recount them, but the feeling remains.

“I started playing music as medicine for myself to feel good and digest some melancholy,” Marty leaves off. “Over time, I realized if music makes me feel good, the people around me who become a part of it will feel good too. It connects us on the same wavelength. I hope to give the world something real and refreshing.

Maria Carrelli Live

Hailing from Ludlow, Kentucky, Carrelli draws strongly from Appalachian bluegrass and traditional country music, transitioning between upbeat tempos and melody-driven ballads on her debut solo record. Having already traveled extensively with multiple folk and bluegrass groups, her musicianship and songwriting ability act as strong complements to her unique lyrical style. With influences ranging from genre mainstays like Loretta Lynn and Wanda Jackson all the way to current innovators (Kacey Musgraves’ recent Grammy sweep comes to mind), Carrelli represents a free-thinking, adventurous trend in modern country and bluegrass.

Acousta Noir

If you missed him unplugged last week, you have another chance! I like this one man show so much, I had to ask him back to give you all the chance to see just what I see. Come on out and listen! He only comes down once a year so don’t miss it again.

Coming from a background shaped by punk, rock and roll, roots, and various traditional folk styles, Acousta Noir brings a unique, yet oddly familiar, set of original songs to the table, along with his renditions of select and obscure covers.

Joshua first began playing music in 1994, and has been a part of a varied array of musical projects. These include punk bands (as a singer, guitarist, and drummer), singing for a heavy metal band, and a couple projects playing the upright bass.

Acousta Noir sets itself apart from the crowd by being akin to many acts, but defiantly unique from them all.
Life tends to work a little differently in Douglas County, Oregon, and Joshua works hard to embody that lifestyle in his music, while creatively utilizing his influences of traditional folk and country music, as well as punk rock and the good old story tellin' side of things.

"Just how much punch can one guy pack into a set? You'll be reeling as he blends raw bluesy soul with a rough and rowdy edge. If you like to dance, stomp your feet, or just have a good time, be there."

Killer Whale~Mel's 40th Birthday Bash

Come by The Alley this Friday to check out one of the best bands out of San Francisco, “Killer Whale” for an awesome mixture of folk rock, psychedelic electronica, surf rock and the Caribbean. They are going to bring the funk!

"Killer Whale is a project undertaken by Thomas Johnson, a Baton Rouge, LA native, that mixes the histories and melodies of the South with the Bay and the result is something surprisingly reminiscent of the 60’s and 70’s, complete with drawbar organs, introspective lyrics, and guitar riffs that soar above a churning rhythm section."
